Nota d'usoTo stanch e to staunch si possono usare entrambi con il significato di “arrestare o fermare il flusso di qualcosa”; to staunch è preferito nell'uso britannico, mentre to stanch è più diffuso nell'inglese americano: to staunch the flow of blood, arrestare il sanguinamento; staunch your tears, smetti di piangere. Tuttavia, per l'aggettivo, che significa “fermo, leale”, la forma più corretta è staunch: a staunch ally, un alleato fidato; a staunch union supporter, un fermo sostenitore del sindacato.
